The Great Mealworm Ecosystem Experiment

  1. Name all members of your group:

  1. You will design one experiment:
    1. Whether mealworms prefer hot or cold
    2. Whether mealworms prefer light or dark
    3. Whether mealworms prefer wet or dry

Circle the experiment that Ms. LeCaine assigns you group.

  1. Write a problem statement for your experiment:

  1. Write a hypothesis for your experiment:

  1. Materials:  Ms. LeCaine will provide each group with 5 mealworms, one petri dish, black and white paper, water, a source of heat and and source of light.

  1. Using the materials listed above, write a procedure for this experiment:

When you are done, have it approved by Ms. LeCaine!!!

  1. Collect the supplies you need and set up your experiment.  When you are ready for the mealworms, come see Ms. LeCaine.

  1. Record what happens below:

  1. Clean up you lab station and return the mealworms to Ms.LeCaine

  1. Answer the following questions:

    1. What variables did you manipulate in this experiment?  What was the responding variable, what where 2 controls?

    1. Summarize your results in words or in diagrams.

    1. Compare your results to someone else in class who did the same experiment.  Where the results the same or different?
    2. Based on your observations, which habitat did the mealworms prefer?  Before you answer, ask other groups what they got as well so that you can tell me if they like:

Hot or cold, light or dark and wet or dry.

    1. How could you improve on your experiment?
